4 Easy Tips to Prevent Weight Gain This Holiday Season

The Holiday Season is finally upon us.  If you're like me, you are up to your puffy jacket in holiday parties, treats and temptations.

If you're like me you're also probably thinking of ways to enjoy some goodies while not gaining weight.  And you want to do it without adding too much additional time to your life.

Well lucky for you it's easy to add a little exercise into your day (and your commute) with Conquer the Cold!  Here are our top tips for avoiding weight gain this holiday season:

1. Aim for no weight GAIN, not weight LOSS

The first revelation I had this year was that the goal is not to lose weight.  It's to avoid gaining any.  If you keep this in mind, it takes a little of the pressure off.  Just try to keep it constant, don't worry about shedding pounds.

2. Run home from work 

If you live 3 or so miles away from work, why not bring some running clothes to work and run home?  In the morning, plan on taking the bus or have someone drop you off.  If you live further away, consider parking at a Park & Ride lot, taking the bus to work and then running back in the evening.

Just don't forget to keep yourself visible with lights and/or reflective gear.   

Trevor Step over at Running Fit in downtown Ann Arbor tells me they have a ton of accessories to help you run safely.  They have reflective vests, LED flashing lights and reflective apparel. His recommendation is to make sure to have clip on lights because they are extremely versatile for whatever you are wearing and you can just clip it on, turn it on and go.

I also usually bring a small backpack so I can store my purse/wallet and keys for the run home.  But you might also be able to just fit these in your pocket.

3. Take a walk or stair climb during the workday

Aim to get out of your office at least once during the day and take a brisk walk.  Itdoesn't matter how long, really.  Just get out there and get moving!  Alternatively, you could just adjust your habits at work and take the stairs instead of the elevator.

4. Get off your bus a couple of stops early and walk or run home from there.

Again, this is just a little thing but it can add up to a bunch more calories burned.
