What is car sharing?

The basic premise behind a car sharing is that a small fleet of cars can be utilized by a great number of individuals on an as-needed basis. Instead of individual members incurring the costs of owning a car (i.e. insurance, repairs, car payments) they pay a flat membership fee, plus an hourly or mileage rate each time they use the car.  

Do we have a car sharing service in Ann Arbor?

Yes, ZipCar has finally come to Ann Arbor! The University of Michigan has signed up with ZipCar to offer 6 cars around campus (2 on central campus, 2 on north, and 2 on the medical campus).  Anyone over 21 can sign for a Zipcar membership & if you're a University of Michigan employee or student you can sign-up at a discounted rate ($30/yr). 

What does it cost to join if you're not affiliated with the UM?
You pay a one-time $25 application fee. Your annual fee of $50. No deposit. No monthly commitment.

What does it cost to drive?
From $8/hour and $60/day (any 24-hour period), depending on the car model. Gas, reserved parking, insurance, XM Radio and 125 FREE miles are included.

What about housemates or family?
Once you join, you can add other drivers to your account. It's $25 to apply and $25 annually.
