Commuter Challenge 2007

Commuter Challenge results are in! We had 75 organizational units sign up and 869 commuters actively participate in the 2007 Commuter Challenge!  Collectively, we logged 116,277 miles~ the equivalent of almost five trips around the earth. And although we didn’t reach our goal of 200,000 miles, we still had a major impact in our local community.

If we had driven these 116,277 miles alone, instead of making the choose to bike, walk, bus, telecommute, and/or carpool, we would have produced approximately 111,804 lbs of Carbon Dioxide and a whole host other nasty chemicals. We also would have made the roads more congested and parking less available in dense areas like downtown Ann Arbor. Great job to everyone who participated in this year's Commuter Challenge!

The organizational participation was also outstanding this year, we had 17 organizations with 100% participation! All winners in the 1-9, 10-24, & 25-99 employee category had 100% participation. In the 100-499 employee category, NVFEL/EPA with 360 employees had an outstanding 25.83% participation rate. And in the 500+ employee size, the City of Ann Arbor with 820 employees, had a 9.02% participation rate!

Commuter Challenge 2006

The final results are in and the 2006 Commuter Challenge proved to be even more successful than last year’s Commuter Challenge. This May, 999 employees from 66 organizations, participated in the Commuter Challenge and collectively logged 277,272 sustainable transportation miles (the distance to the moon + a few miles) and avoided producing 175,915 lbs of Carbon Dioxide during the Curb Your Car Month. (Disclaimer: We should probably only take credit for 182,952 of those miles~ since 94,320 were logged by one of our telecommuters who recently relocated!  The Carbon Dioxide tally is calculated on the 182,952 mileage.)

Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Carbon dioxide is the main greenhouse gas created by combustion emitted primarily from human activity such as burning of fossil fuels to generate electricity and vehicles. Scientists believe these greenhouse gases are causing the earth's climate to change.

Bike to Work Day Ride and Rally (May 20th, 2005)

Bike commuters met at 4 different locations around Ann Arbor and rode into town together for a rally at City Hall. Once at City Hall, bikers enjoyed complimentary coffee, bagels, and fruit. Bicycling Magazine gave away 50 new bikes as part of their BikeTown USA program. The ride and rally drew about 100 people.
