What does an Ambassador do? 

An Ambassador encourages employees to walk, bus or bike to work by answering questions, encouraging participation in the Commuter Challenge, leading commutes, and being a visible supporter of sustainable commuting during Curb Your Car Month.

What Makes a Good Ambassador?  You might make a good Ambassador if:

  • You walk, bike or bus to work
  • You're organization is participating in the Commuter Challenge
  • You want to encourage others to get to work by walking, biking and busing
  • You like meeting people and getting to know them better
  • You want to make our community a great place to work.

What are the requirements for being an Ambassador?

The only requirement for being an Ambassador is that you must be working or volunteering at an organization that is participating in the 2008 Commuter Challenge.  To sign your organization up for the Commuter Challenge, go to the Commuter Challenge registration page by clicking here.

  • You'll receive a free t-shirt
  • Your name will be on the getDowntown website
  • You'll receive a special thank you gift for our volunteer efforts
  • You'll have the satisfaction of helping others learn how to use a sustainable mode that is better for the environment and better for their health.

What is the time commitment for being an Ambassador?

  • All Ambassadors are required to attend a half-hour Ambassador Orientation Session.
  • We ask that Ambassadors commit to helping people in their local community or worksite get to work using a sustainable mode of transportation during the Commuter Challenge.
  • A half-hour of time during the month of April so we can take your picture for our website.

What do Walk Ambassadors do?

  • Wear a t-shirt provided by getDowntown to identify yourself as a Walk Ambassador during the month of May.
  • Volunteer to help others in your community or worksite walk to work during May by doing one or more of the following: 
    • Walk to work and encourage others to do the same during Walk to Work Wednesdays in May.
    • Put up a sign at your work letting people know they can ask you about walking to work.  getDowntown can provide you with a template.
    • Send out an email to your friends or coworkers letting them know if they have any questions about walking to work they can ask you.
  • Write about your walk commuting experience for the getDowntown blog
  • Identify yourself as a Walk Ambassador on the getDowntown website along with an intersection close to your home and an email so less experienced walkers can contact you and walk to work with you on a given day.

What do Bike Ambassadors do?

  • Wear a t-shirt provided by getDowntown to identify yourself as a Bike Ambassador during the month of May.
  • Demonstrate proper biking etiquette and safety: this includes a having a helmet and abiding by traffic rules.
  • Volunteer to help others in your community or worksite bike to work during May by doing one or more of the following: 
    • Bike to work and encourage others to do the same during Bike to Work Fridays in May.
    • Put up a sign at your work letting people know they can ask you about bike commuting.  getDowntown can provide you with a template.
    • Send out an email to your friends or coworkers letting them know if they have any questions about biking commuting they can ask you.
  • Write about your bike commuting experience for the getDowntown blog
  • Identify yourself as a Bike Ambassador on the getDowntown website along with an intersection close to your home and an email so less experienced riders can contact you and ride to work with you on a given day.
  • Attend the Bike to Work Day Rally on May 16th from 8am-9am at City Hall.

What do Bus Ambassadors do?

  • Wear a T-shirt provided by getDowntown to identify yourself as a Bus Ambassador during the month of May.
  • Volunteer to help others in your community or worksite bus to work during May by doing one or more of the following:
    • Bus to work and encourage others to do the same during Transit Thursdays in May.
    • Put up a sign at your work letting people know they can ask you about bus commuting.  getDowntown can provide you with a template.
    • Send out an email to your friends or coworkers letting them know if they have any questions about bus commuting they can ask you.
  • Write about your bus commuting experience for the getDowntown blog
  • Identify yourself as a Bus Ambassador on the getDowntown website along with the bus route you take, which stop you get on at and an email so less experienced bus riders can contact you and ride to work with you on a given day.

Want to be more than one type of Ambassador?  That's fine!  Just let us know that on the Ambassador registration form.
